The first time Dann and I saw the trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, we were both thrilled. The Danny Kaye version from 1947 was one of his favorite movies growing up, and I loved the way the trailer was edited with that Of Monsters and Men song. We both had high hopes.

So imagine my delight on New Year’s Day when we not only saw and loved the movie, but discovered that at least half of the soundtrack was made up of José González and Junip songs. Say what??

Of course the album includes ‘Dirty Paws’ and there’s a fun mix of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ featuring Kristen Wiig. There are also 3 original José González songs and 2 new ones from Junip.

I really enjoyed the movie, too. It’s a bit different from the 1939 James Thurber short story, but in some ways that was going to have to be the case. I’ve always liked Ben Stiller, Adam Scott is hilarious as the bearded bad guy, and in general it was the sort of movie that made me feel hope and happiness. (We saw Wolf of Wall Street that day too, and yikes. Nothing redeeming about that one.)

Want to start the week of right? Go get this record. Do it now. Go.
