Have you heard of Fenton's Creamery?
It's a place I've heard about my whole life from my dad, who grew up in the Bay Area and also loves good food. More than once, he instructed me (quite sternly) that if I ever found myself at Fenton's, I was to order a grilled crab sandwich and a black and tan. For most of my life, I nodded and smiled, not really believing I'd ever find myself at Fenton's.
Then I saw the Pixar hit UP, and it endeared me to the place (and my dad) in a whole new way. When I realized we'd be driving through Oakland on our way to Sonoma on Saturday, I convinced the band that we should probably stop at Fenton's for lunch.
I'm such a nerd I texted a whole bunch of photos to my parents while we were there, along with a play-by-play of what we ordered and how good it all tasted. This is the sort of thing I love sharing with my parents now that I'm grown. It's the sort of thing I'd like to share with my own kids, if I ever have any.
The original Fenton's on Piedmont Ave. has been there for 115 years and they still make small batches of ice cream from scratch every day. Looking through their History Gallery, I imagined my dad as a teenager, eating ice cream with his buddies and LOVING it.
Dann and I took my dad's advice and ordered a grilled crab salad sandwich. We split it though, since we knew we'd be following it up with a Black and Tan. I forgot to take a photo before we each took a bite. It was so good we just couldn't wait. So good.
We shared the Black and Tan with two other people, and it was gone in less than 5 minutes. What's a Black and Tan, you ask? Oh just Toasted Almond and creamy Vanilla ice cream layered with handmade Caramel and Chocolate Fudge, topped with toasted almonds, whipped cream and cherry. IT. WAS. CRAZY.
So the next time you find yourself in Oakland, make time to stop in for a crab salad sandwich and a Black and Tan. My dad would be pleased, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
