I worked as a substitute teacher yesterday, at the school I taught at last year. There was even one whole class of my former students first thing in the morning. I think it threw them for a loop to show up and see me there, in place of their regular teacher, but they handled it well. Some of them seemed genuinely excited to see me, and a few others came by throughout the day to see if it was really me, back in the flesh. I couldn't believe how much taller and older some of them looked.
And when the end of the day came and I didn't have to go to any meetings or grade any papers or make any phone calls, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for this place I find myself in. This place of mostly having total freedom to decide how I spend my days. This place of knowing that I can handle subbing for a day or two at a time, and that it's possible it will actually be kind of fun. This place of peace. It is so good.
So once more, this is what I'm thankful for. For where I am and what I'm doing, right now today.
What are you thankful for today?
