Guess what? One week from today will be the five year anniversary of the day I wrote my first ever blog post.
I can't believe how much has happened since then. I got married, changed jobs four times, and moved three times. It's fun to look back at old blog posts and remember all the things that were going on when I wrote them. Some of my favorite conversations with my students are there, in writing, to help me remember what cool kids they were. Stories and photos from my travels with Dann are there too, to help me when my memories start to fade. I think that's why I've kept blogging - because being able to recall things I've done, places I've been, and people I've known fulfills some deep need in my soul.
But it's time for a change. I've developed a habit of posting here every Monday through Friday, even if it's a stretch to come up with something to share with you. Now that I have more time to spend writing, I want to spend it really writing. I want to BE a writer. So starting next week, I'll be posting less frequently here in order to spend more time writing other things. When I have something significant to share with you (like a Bucket List achievement or a Something From Nothing interview), I will, but I'm going to cut back on the other stuff. I'm going to let myself off this you-better-post-something-on-your-blog-every-day-or-nobody-will-come-back-and-then-your-life-won't-matter hook I've hung myself up on. I mean, really.
The good news is that I'm taking a cue from one of my favorite bloggers, and doing a giveaway for this blogiversary! That's right, next Tuesday one lucky winner will be chosen to receive all the goods in the photo above: a copy of Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird, a copy of Annie Dillard's The Writing Life, a brand new composition notebook, and a package of my favorite "lead pencils". It will mark my transition into full-on writerhood, and maybe yours too? All you have to do is leave a comment below (and your email address, please, if you're not certain I have it) by 6pm MST on Monday, 2/11. I'll announce the winner on Tuesday, 2/12.
Anne Lamott tweeted this quote from Frederich Buechner last night and it drove the decision to head in this new direction home for me: "Write about what truly matters to you - not just things to catch the eye of the world but things...that have touched you to the quick." That's my plan.
Happy Tuesday to you.
